The first qualifying event for the Schools Pistol Championships took place yesterday (Wednesday) at Ysgol Bro Dinefwr in Wales.

Emily Sawyer, Kate Thomas and Ozzy Burrow were the top scorers on the day in their categories and qualified for the National Final taking place at Stoke Mandeville in January.

The other qualifiers from the event can be found by clicking on the full results, here.

We are also excited to announce two GB Athlete Ambassadors to the Championships, Kristian Callaghan and Issy Bailey.

Issy was one of the two Team GB Pistol athletes who competed in the Rio Paralympic Games. The 23-year-old Issy was introduced to Pistol Shooting in 2013 as part of her rehabilitation following a car accident in 2013. Prior to which she was a former hockey player.

Issy ranked an impressive 14th Place in the Air Pistol event in Rio and has her sights set on Tokyo 2020. She said: “I’m thrilled to be an athlete ambassador for the Championships and help encourage other young athletes to follow in my path and achieve their goals in sport.”

Kristian Callaghan, 24yrs from Newbury, first got into shooting in the Pony Club. Growing out of his horse he discovered his talents lay elsewhere – at the shooting range! Amongst his many achievements and records broken to date, Kristian won Bronze medals at both the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, World University Championships and has his sights set on an exciting and busy 2018, with the upcoming Commonwealth Games in the Gold Coast and World Championships in South Korea.

When asked what advice he’d give to an upcoming shooter, Kristian said: “Give yourself as much competition exposure as you can and don't be afraid of disappointing results or outcomes; they happen a lot.”

You can get the chance to meet Kristian and Issy during the Pistol Championships and have the opportunity to be inspired by their current efforts, drive and success at being Britain’s best and taking on the world.

There is also more good news from the pistol shooting world.  British Shooting are delighted to have the British Pistol Club on board as its first sponsor for the Schools Pistol Championships 2017/18. The BPC founded in 1957, welcomes Junior and Senior athletes as well as provides monthly competitions throughout the year. The BPC prestigious Air Pistol Championships is held in early January at Bisley, Surrey.

Meanwhile, the original line-up of locations for the Schools Pistol Championships has changed slightly after Glyn School had to cancel due to logistical issues. That venue has now been changed to Bookham Rifle Club on the same date.

Speaking of the change in venue, Gorgs said: "With the first qualifying competition taking place yesterday in Wales, I’m thrilled that this unforeseen circumstance of changing the venue hasn’t impacted on the first South-East Qualifier and the event is still able to go ahead.

"I wish to thank Bookham Rifle Club and the South-East Talent Network for their support and look forward to an exciting competition.”
