British Shooting is delighted to announce the latest Olympic and Paralympic athletes named on the World Class Programme (WCP).
The World Class Performance Programme was created by UK Sport and is funded by the UK National Lottery. It was put in place to ensure that the UK’s most talented athletes have every chance of realising their potential in major competitions.
British Shooting’s performance group uses a set criteria when making athlete selection, using objective evidence and their expert views to select the top performers in the country.
The athletes named onto the programme are separated into three distinct levels. The top two levels are podium and podium potential.
Podium - supporting athletes with realistic medal winning capabilities at the next Olympic Games (i.e. a maximum of four years away from the podium).
Podium Potential – comprising of athletes whose performances have suggested that they have realistic medal winning capabilities for 2020 or 2024.
Sitting below podium potential, the third level is the British Shooting Academy Programme (BSAP). The BSAP is designed to support athletes to move towards podium potential level and to continually progress towards competing regularly for Great Britain on the world class stage.
Performance Director, Steven Seligmann, said: ‘We are really pleased to announce the 2018/19 cohort of WCP athletes. The British Shooting WCP has a very clear focus of developing and supporting athletes to consistently medal at the Olympics and Paralympics.
“This is an exciting year for a very exciting group of athletes and we are looking forward to supporting them and seeing how they progress through a period where Tokyo 2020 quota places will be available.. We have seen a notable increase in the level of performance and talent aiming to gain a place on the WCP, which is testament to the hard work that is going on in the WCP and the respective home nation talent pathways.
“We’re extremely grateful to UK Sport and the National Lottery for their ongoing support to our WCP. This resource enables us to provide athletes with the training, competition, sport science and medicine and coaching support that will assist them to fulfil their aspirations and deliver on the world stage.”
Following the selection process we are pleased to confirm the WCP cohort for 2018/19 as:

Talent Pathway Manager, Dean Leak, said: “The British Shooting Academy Programme continues year on year to be a fundamental stepping stone for athletes preparation in becoming world leading shooters. The strength in depth across the Olympic events are highly competitive and provides the selection panel with difficult performance decisions to make.
“Since the Academy Programme was created in 2014 we have seen 8 athletes promoted to Podium Potential which signals the importance of what the programme provides in enabling a bespoke package for each individual athlete.
“We invest in potential who can deliver within the next 8 years and it’s great to see greater presence in the Pistol Programme demonstrating the great work being done in the pathway to create competition in all events. We’re excited increased the number of opportunities for the WCP Olympic and Paralympic programme to integrate training more often and providing high potential athletes to join in to get a flavour for what it takes to perform at the highest level.”
