The British Shooting Schools Pistol Championships continued its tour of the country yesterday visiting Newcastle for the first time.

The North East Championships was a new event to the programme for 2018-19 and was kindly hosted by the Newcastle Fencing & Sports Trust who welcomed all to their fabulous facilities.

Athletes with a wide range of shooting experience and ability took part in the event and there were some fantastic scores in the nerve-jangling atmosphere.

Talented performances throughout the day ensured the finals where crowd pleasers and not to be missed by the talent scouts present.

The Junior North East title went to Toby Aberdeen, with bronze going to sister Eve and silver to Ella Frost representing Read School, Drax, North Yorkshire.

Holly Haigh took the Intermediate gold, with Erin Redfern from Driffield School & Sixth Form and Olivia Graham of Durham School claiming silver and bronze respectfully.

It was the very last shot of the day which changed the Senior leader board, as Emily Gleaves of Carmel College pipped Carolyn Dickson to the post to win the Senior North East Championships by a single point. Carolyn had already won a National Final Quota Place, which meant it went to team mate Lauren Robson. Ruth Bryden claimed the bronze medal and too a place at the National Final.

The Royal Grammar School, Newcastle claimed the team Junior and Senior team events also securing their team places at the National Final.

Gorgs Geikie, British Shooting Events & Commercial Coordinator, said: “This first North East Championships was a great first event of its kind in the region. We would like to thank Iain Aberdeen, the event coordinator and his team for delivering such a fabulous event. Also, Gun Trader for their continued support to these ever-growing successful British Shooting Schools Pistol Championships which are proving the future of target shooting in Great Britain is very exciting.”

Next stop is Ellesmere School for the West Midlands Championships, where over 120 athletes will be fighting it out for the last National Final Individual and Team Quota Places.
