The 21st Romsey Scout HQ hosted the Scout and Open Target Sprint Championships on Saturday 6th May, which was a great success thanks to the organising team lead by Stephen Batchelor and Trevor Draper.

Stephen and Trevor are from from two different Scouting Districts and Rifle Clubs being 21st Romsey and Shackleton Rifle Clubs respectively.

FULL RESULTS LIST

This is the third year in succession that the event has happened, and grown in stature and support each time. This year, 48 athletes competed in total, with representatives also from the Netherlands and South Africa, who crossed the water to compete at the event and whom all returned home impressed with the delivery of Target Sprint in the UK.

Stephen and Trevor, the key players in planning and delivering the successful event, have known each other for many years. But it is in recent times that their coaching and event deliverer partnership has grown, as together they have undergone the NSRA Instructor and coaching courses and both started coaching with the Scout National Rifle Squad.

The competition has evolved over it’s three-year existence from being a closed Scout event, to opening its doors to an open audience alongside the Scout Championships. Stephen said: “The introduction of commentary this year proved popular allowing those wanting to watch the athletes run being in touch with what was happening on the range.

"During the event we also had some fun targets to enable those not competing, or waiting to compete, a chance to try either rifle or pistol shooting. The whole event is a fun and social event with a great community atmosphere. We’re looking forward to next year’s event which has been provisionally booked for May 2018.”

British Shooting’s Events Coordinator Gorgs Geikie, gave huge congratulations to Trevor and Stephen on their event.

She said: “We’re thrilled for the first time to include this event in the British Shooting National Series, where athletes qualified for our National Final on the 9th September at Yate Outdoor Sports Complex.

"We hope to see many of these athletes being crowned National Champions! It was also great to see such great pre and post coverage of the event in the local press, helping to raise the awareness of our whole sport and the positive welcoming impact it can have on the community.”
